FAQs
How does Teeth Whitening work?
The main ingredient in the whitening gel is hydrogen peroxide. When the
gel is placed on the teeth (using the mouthpiece provided) the hydrogen
peroxide breaks down into water and a radical (compound constituent).
In this state, the radical attaches itself to stain molecules. The stain
molecules become weak, which allows oxygen to reach and whiten the tooth
enamel.
How long will the whitening last? Will I have to whiten my teeth again?
Normally the new whiter colour of your teeth lasts well. However, the effect
is dependent on what has caused the teeth to discolour in the first place.
If you drink lots of coffee, red wine or cola drinks, the effect may
darken slightly over time. Some patients do a top-up treatment after
1-7 years; some patients do not need to.
How will my teeth feel?
Normally the teeth feel very clean after the bleaching procedure. The bleaching
materials also have an indirect effect on the gums in helping them to
heal or improving health. (This is how the technique was invented: it
was first used to heal gum irritation during orthodontic treatment.)
How
white?
It is typical for teeth to become up to ten shades whiter following a course
of home whitening. The tooth whitening results will vary for each individual
and will depend on the natural shading of your teeth prior to whitening.
What are the side effects?
Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or
after the treatment. Others report discomfort in the gums, or white patches
on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear
within a few days of the treatment finishing.
Will the whitening have any effect on existing crowns/veneers/bonds?
Generally speaking it is impossible to change the colour of the caps, veneers
or bonds with any tooth whitening treatment. However, the treatment may
remove stains from crowns, veneers and bonded teeth.
Do I need to do anything before my appointment?
It is advisable that you have had a scale and polish at least within the
last 6 months, and that you have had a dental examination by your own
dentist within the last 12 months.
